It was a hectic weekend for members of Lewes AC with competitions across all ages.
On the Saturday the under 13 and under 15 athletes were making their mark at the Dartford track in the Youth Development League while the club’s senior and veteran runners were competing in the South Downs 100 mile relay.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, the under 17 and under 20 athletes were competing for honours in the Youth Development League at their home track in Lewes.
The under Lewes AC under 13 and under 15 team had a great match on Saturday and won the seven team event, beating Bexley AC, Dartford Harriers, East Grinstead AC, Hastings AC, Medway Park Phoenix AC and Newham and Essex Beagles.
There were many star performances in the Lewes team as evidenced by the more than 50 new life time bests being achieved by the young athletes. Ethan Bickmore-Vaughan equalled the club’s 100m record of 11.8secs, which puts him 31st nationally and fourth in the SE Region.
Polly Saunders also secured a new personal best in the under 15 pole vault with a vault of 2.60m which ranks her 13th nationally and third in the SE Region.
Competing on the same Saturday were three senior and veteran teams in the 100 mile South Downs Relay.
This requires six runners to run three non-consecutive legs each.
Each team requires a mini-bus driver, navigator and time keeper to get the runners to the change-over points before the previous runner arrives.
The best performance of the three teams must be the veteran runners of Andrew Masters, Simon Thomas, Lewis Sida, Simon Bomford, Mat Homewood and Martin Komen, who together completed the 100 miles in just two minutes over the 12 hours, setting a new club record for the over 40 veteran men.
The women’s team ably captained by Carole Walters completed the 100 mile run in 13 hours 54.32 minutes. The team with Carole consisted of Katherine Emery, Sarah Healey, Paula Taylor, Anne-Marie Turton and Sally Norris
The men’s mixed age team of Simon Roberts, Andrew Chitty, Tim Monson, Matt Haycocks, Tony Deacon and Pablo Ibaruren completed the 100 miles in a time of 12 hours 52.11 minutes
On Sunday it was the turn of the Lewes AC under 17 and under 20 athletes competing in the Youth Development League at the Lewes Track.
Up against six other teams the Lewes athletes, competing as part of Team Sussex sponsored by Rydon Homes, had a great match and finished a very close second to a strong Crawley AC team.
The teams competing and the points scores were:
