Lewes Ladies 2nd XI progressed into the next round of the Sussex Knockout Cup in dramatic fashion with a 5-4 win on penalty flicks after their game with Hailsham 1st XI ended in a draw,

This was a Lewes home game but there was plenty of support for both sides, which had a positive impact on both sets of players.

Lewes battled through the first half with a couple of shots and short corners but at half time it was 0-0.

Hailsham were a strong team, playing a couple of fast players up front and testing the Lewes defence. Lewes responded, demonstrating excellent skills, particularly from Innei Shum who continuously put herself in the action, with a high success rate. Lewes’ first goal came from Laura Hannan, worked initially from Hannah Thorpe then a combined effort from Pippa Wassall and Kristina Money. Hailsham soon retaliated with a goal from a short corner.

The 1-1 draw took the knockout game to penalty flicks. Elle Chilcott, Tara Rogers, Money, Wassall and Hannan all stepped up to the mark and scored four flicks between them, enough to them into the next round.

Goalkeeper Carla Leach made some impressive saves throughout the game and from the penalty spot.
