An inspired free-hit from Katie James salvaged a draw for Hailsham in their clash with Lewes 2s on Saturday.
The home team were fired up for their third encounter of the season with Lewes 2s, their most recent encounter in the Sussex Plate semi-final resulting in victory for Hailsham.
The match started at a cracking pace, with plenty of end-to-end play, and Hailsham winning a number of penalty corners. The Lewes keeper was on fine form though, saving everything that the Hailsham forwards could throw at her.
With half-time fast approaching, Lewes attacked again at pace and after a melee in the D, Lewes found the back-board ending the first half 1-0 up.
After a good team talk, Hailsham came out once again fired-up to earn some points. Youngster Susie Smith had a great run of play and showed great courage after being brought down twice whilst attacking on goal.
Great play from mid-fielders Emma Allen and Lydnsey Horne resulted in a free hit just outside the Lewes D which Katie James took quickly, running into the D and scoring the equaliser. Hailsham keeper Julie Abson then made a critical save, and with Hailsham on the attack, the final whistle was blown for a draw, with both teams having played some exceptional hockey.
