Lewes 1st XI 2 Sutton Valence 1’s 3

For the last two seasons Lewes have started poorly after the Christmas break. They seemed to have put this behind them when taking on second-placed Sutton Valence when they quickly went into a two-goal lead, first from a goal from Dave Roberts following an excellent inter-passing move down the left and then a penalty corner from Alex Warner.

However an off ball incident resulted in a melee in midfield and Jack Fox was controversially sent off with a red card.

Even with 10 men Lewes seemed to be more than a match for the opposition and came close to scoring on several occasions in a game played at a fast and furious pace.

The Lewes defence was magnificent with joint man of match performances from Rory Jervis and Matt Rickson. But gradually the weight of numbers told and Sutton Valence pulled one goal back just before half time, with a second midway through the second half and a winner 10 minutes from time.
