LEWES Hockey Club provided six of the thirteen players in the Sussex Squad that successfully retained the County Under-21 Championship in Portsmouth over the weekend.
Matt Hickman, Harvey Waller, Max Rhodes, Chris Spruce, Nicholi Parrington-Berski and Ollie Baxter were all in the winning squad.
Sussex beat hosts Combined Services in their opening match on Saturday 6-1 with goals from Matt Hickman, Chris Spruce (two), Harvey Waller and Matt Cox (two).
They then followed up with a closer 5-3 win over Shropshire with at hat-trick from Hickman and goals from Ollie Baxter and Cox.
This left their final fixture on Sunday morning against Lincolnshire as a winner took all as both sides were undefeated.
Sussex produced some of their best hockey of the weekend and won 3-2 with a hat-trick from Spruce.
Sussex took an early lead before Lincolnshire missed a crucial penalty stroke but equalised before half time. Sussex stretched their lead with two further goals in the second half before Lincolnshire scored their second almost on the final whistle with the ball adjudged to have just gone over the line despite a desperate save from keeper Chris Borsoi.
Sussex only had a squad of thirteen players for the weekend and when Joe Kelly was injured on the Saturday the squad was fully stretched but deservedly won the competition.
Matt Cox was named Player of the Tournament.
