On Saturday 28th February Lewes Wanderers Dominic Lowden and Bob Evans crossed the border into Kent to take part in the San Fairy Ann Spring Criteriums.

These hour long races on a purpose-built outdoor tarmac circuit at Gravesend Cyclopark are run by the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists who organise events for racers aged 40 and over.

It was a lovely morning with pretty much the perfect wind direction

The standard of racing is generally high, with many ex-professional cyclists and former national and international champions as regular competitors. Both did well with Dom finishing 4th in the 50-60 year old age group and Bob 5th amongst over 60s on a dull and murky Saturday.

Illness to Micky Turner and Tamar Vanderhaas meant that last year’s club best all-rounder Tom Glandfield was our lone participant in the Sussex Cycling Association Hardriders event on Sunday 1st March. This is a 22.8mile time-trial over a rolling anticlockwise course along A and B roads. Starting from the charming village of Staplefield the route initially heads north east to Handcross before turning south to Handcross, down to Cowfold, along the A272 to Ansty, through Cuckfield and Balcombe and back to Handcross.

It was a lovely morning with pretty much the perfect wind direction as although the course is effectively a loop, the most exposed section is heading east along the A272 and then up to Cuckfield and the combatants were treated to a raging tailwind for all of that. Tom went a minute and a half quicker than his previous best on the course and was chuffed to bits to finish fifth (and first SCA rider) in 56 minutes dead. Last man away Simon McNamara (Pedal Heaven) caught him for 2 minutes and won in a very impressive 53:24.
