East Hoathly’s Nigel Gates had a dramatic victory at the European Duathlon championships held in Horst, Holland.
Competing in the 60-64 age group, the Ringmer teacher established a good lead over his rivals on the first 5km run.
Going out into the countryside on the 20km bike section, Gates was overtaken by the German pair or Heinz Storz and Nikula Ulrich.
“They appeared to be working together “ said Gates, “and this made me determined to keep the gap down, but going into the shorter 2.5km second run I was over a minute behind. On the twisty route through the town they were already out of sight, but I caught Ulrich with 800m to go and could see Storz.
“I pushed hard down the long finishing straight and caught him with 100m to go and just went for it”.
Gates won by 7 seconds in a time of 63 minutes 41 seconds.
