Lewes Ladies made an emphatic return from the winter break on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 home win against Colchester United.
After some good solid performances of late but nothing to show for their efforts the Rookettes finally notched up their third win of this campaign. The win moves them up two places into seventh and was just reward for a fine team performance. Captain Kelly Newton got the show on the road with a rare goal, and a fine one at that after good work from Andreia Veiga.
Lel Smith headed home the second to give the Rookettes a comfortable lead going into half time. The high tempo continued after the break as United struggled to make an impression, and it was sub Jo Marquez who added a third in the 74th minute with a cross-come-shot which floated over the stricken U’s keeper.
Not wanting to be outdone, fellow Portuguese Veiga had a pop from a similar distance which ended the same way to secure all three points. The Rookettes have deserved a result like this for some time.
Boss Jacquie Agnew said: “We deserved the win and this was a massive three points for us today. Our performances have been really good and this group of players have the desire and belief to get the results now we are at the business end of the season.”
