Lewes FC have ‘revamped’ their annual summer soccer school sessions.

The aim is to focus more on skills – while still providing a fun environment for youngsters. But the plan is also to create a ‘skills pathway’ – where young players can develop their talent and perhaps even end up in the Rooks first team a number of years down the line.

Lewes FC Director Charlie Dobres said: We’ve revamped them this year with a greater focus on ball skills and also with a view to starting to identify potential talent for some more in-depth kids’ skills sessions we’ll be running later in the year.

“The Soccer Sessions are about fun/participation but also about creating a skills pathway all the way through to the first team in years to come.”

Rooks general manager Adrian Howell said: “Traditional holiday courses are almost totally about just playing fun games with very limited actual coaching – generally because the coaches are young, not that well qualified and with limited experience.

“The new Lewes FC courses are still aimed at ensuring all players have fun and enjoy themselves, but they also have a very technical element included to ensure that all players develop their skills as well.

“To that end the courses will be supervised by experienced FA Level 3 coaches who can tailor the courses to specific age groups.”

He added: “We also plan to expand our Development Centre programme for 12-16 year olds which will concentrate specifically on club players who wish to improve their techniques and skills, also under the guidance of highly trained FA Level 3 coaches.

“That way there will be a continuous pathway for players through the club, and who can be identified as potential under 18/Academy players at a much earlier stage.

“With a new Under 21 squad planned for 2014/15 there will then be a further pathway to first team football, and ensure that local players are given every opportunity to play for their local club at the highest possible level.”
