The first ever Aegon Eastbourne Trophy completed last week in a new $50,000 ITF Pro-Circuit challenger event, as a prelude to the upcoming Aegon Eastbourne International.
The ladies only tournament, won by Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit, saw the unseeded 19 year old overcome her much more experienced opponent Alla Kudryavtseva (RUS), 76(4) 76(2) in Friday’s final.
Speaking after the match, a delighted Kontaveit said, “I am so happy. This is my first $50K title and my first title for 2015. I have had a good week – I like Eastbourne, everyone is so friendly.”
The Doubles event was won by unseeded pairing of Shelby Rogers and Coco Vandeweghe (USA), who won in straight sets 75 76(1) against the number one seeds, British duo Jocelyn Rae and Anna Smith.
The free to watch tournament attracted women players with rankings ranging from 107 to 297 in the world, many of whom hope to go on to compete in the Aegon International the week of 20 June.
LTA Tournament Director, Julie Piper, added, “The week has been very successful and all involved have had a good time. The grass courts, as ever, are in excellent condition.”
