WEALDEN Ladies’ recent run of good form continued when they beat Eastbourne in the third round of the the Vivienne Trophy.
From the opening ends the game always looked to be going Wealden’s way as they swept in to an early lead at both the home and away venues. This trend continued throughout the game, with the gap between the two sides continuing to grow.
The home rink skipped by Margaret Winton were in devastating form, notching up 20 shots before their opponents scored, and running away with their game by the huge margin of 41 shots.
This effectively sealed the match in Wealden’s favour but the two away teams led by Ann Spree and Margaret Winton played their part by winning their two closely-fought games at Eastbourne to give Wealden an overall victory by 100 shots to 62.
In the first round of the London and Southern Counties Challenge Shield, Wealden Men came up against Grattons and, despite winning at the away venue, lost out overall by nine shots. The two away rinks proved a contrast in fortunes as the Four skipped by Chris Thomas adjusted immediately to the fast carpet and began to run up a decisive lead.
It was a different story for the team led by Malcolm Goman who dropped five shots on the opening end and looked to be in trouble as they trailed by 11 shots at the interval.
From then on in they gradually fought their way back over the second half of the game to cut the deficit to seven shots and, with the other away team continuing their good form and winning decisively by 15 shots, the home teams had everything to play for.
It was not to be as from the start the two Grattons teams established a match-winning lead that, despite a late rally by Wealden, never looked likely to be overturned.
