Motorsport: Brookes' Bulldog spirit shines through

BARNHAM drag racer Jo Brookes tasted another victory at the 26th annual Bulldog Bash at Shakespeare County Raceway.

Brookes (above) and the Supertwins were trackside, invited to the event to stage Top Gas motorcycle drag racing demonstrations to the cheering stands throughout the weekend.

The event also featured a drag-racing competition with various classes to suit every type of motorcycle and trike as well as a class just for the ladies.

To qualify for the ladies’ class the rules stipulate road legal street bikes only, so Brookes made the change from her Top Gas drag bike on to husband Martin’s Supertwin Suzuki nitroused TL1000R.

This saw the bike back out on the track in competition for the first time since Martin won the Supertwin ET Championship last year.

With ten ladies in the class there was plenty of competition and after the first set of demonstrations, Jo wheeled the bike out for her first runs without nitrous.

Her second run saw her time 10.5 seconds over the quarter mile – making her straight away the fastest lady on the track – and her subsequent run with nitrous sealed the victory with a 10.2-second run, winning Jo her third Bulldog Bash trophy.

Jo thanked Mike Mills at Barton Mills, Rock Oil and NGK Spark Plugs for their continued sponsorship.
