To be or not to be? It is to be for Brookes in Shakespeare country

BARNHAM'S Jo Brookes took part in Ladies That Launch '“ a drag racing event at Shakespeare County Raceway in Warwickshire dedicated to women in motorsport.

It features a drag racing eliminator with trophies awarded for the winning bike and car.

Saturday’s session was spent finishing the bike’s set-up as poor weather had meant there not being sufficient track time to make those final adjustments – but come race day both Jo and husband Martin were confident in the bike’s potential in what looked a challenging field.

The qualifying session saw four bike entries, also including the two ladies from Team Jester and Lizz McCarthy on the Nitrous Junkie comp bike.

Brookes lined up against McCarthy in the qualifying session but a cold tyre – caused by waiting at the lights – meant the launch was off centre and lost Brookes time, giving McCarthy the win in the first round.

The field was reduced to three bikes and the decision was made to go straight into eliminations. Brookes took the win against Team Jester to go into a final against McCarthy.

The Brookes camp had learned from their previous experience against the Comp bike so used the burnout stage to pack as much heat into the tyre as possible.

Brookes hung back at first and when both bikes hit full stage, she was ready for the launch. She went on to take the win – and the trophy.
