MULLETS DOUBLE BRIDGES

DESPITE their inconsistent season, Arundel completed the league double over Three Bridges on Saturday. It took an injury-time goal from Paul Jones for the victory, though.

Jones flicked on a Jon Tucker free kick on the edge of the area and it flew over Bridges' keeper Alan Mansfield and into the goal. After that, Mullets had to deal with five minutes of added time to take home all three points.

Earlier in the second half, Rob Grove had a contender for miss of the season. Gary Norgate squared the ball to him but Grove somehow volleyed an empty net opportunity high over the bar from inside the six-yard box.

Bridges had the better of the first half but failed really to trouble Mullets' keeper Ben O'Connor. Pat Dunning and Pat Massaro shot wide and Danny Smith fizzed a 20-yard drive just the wrong side of the post.

Norgate had Arundel's best chance of the first period but Mansfield denied him from point-blank range.

Before Arundel scored their winner, Bridges' Liam Buchan was through one-on-one with O'Connor but wastefully shot wide.

Chairman Bob Marchant said: "Everybody played well. We really kept the ball well when we got it. At times we were comfortable keeping hold of it for two or three minutes at a time."

Defender Josh Sutcliffe added: "We've had a couple of bad results recently, but on Saturday our passing was a lot better and we were more confident in the way we played.

"We were more solid at the back and Lloyd Walker played very well in midfield."

Arundel are away to Sidley on Saturday before concluding their season with a home match against East Preston on April 30.
