Multi-eventers are a multi-talented lot for Chichester

For Jarrold it was a first competitive pentathlon and she achieved personal bests in the 75m hurdles - with a time of 13.64sec – the shot putt (8.49m) and the high jump (1.38m).

These were fantastic achievements to help her to a points tally of 1,955, placing her fifth in the competition.

The event has given Jarrold a flavour of things to come. For Breach, the event was about competing against her adversaries from the season.

Breach’s best event was her 75m hurdles, where she equalled her PB of 12.44secs.

In the 88m, she knew she had a three-point lead over a Crawley athlete and Breach knew she had to finish with the same time or ahead of her to secure second overall.

It was a cracking race with the Crawley girl making her sprint for the line Mo Farah-style with 200m to go.

Breach was on her shoulder all the way down the home straight but finishing 0.25 seconds behind.

When the points were calculated both girls had finished joint second with 2,338 points - the first time in the history of the event this had happened.

The girls’ parents and coaches agreed while this was exciting for the neutrals it was no good for their stress levels.

It was a great end to a long season for the Chichester duo, who can now concentrate on a winter of hockey and rugby respectively.

Meanwhile, two of Chichester’s most promising young athletes went to Bedford for the English Schools multi-event championships.

For Izzie Brown it was a first appearance in the senior ranks while for Jamie Moore it was his last year in the competition.

Both achieved their aim of finishing inside the top ten.

Brown’s heptathlon programme began with the 100m hurdles and she set a new PB of 16.21sec for 689 points followed by a 1.68m high jump which propelled the Chichester High School pupil into second place.

Brown scored consistently in long jump, 200m and 800m to reach a new PB points tally of 4,021 for a fine eighth place.

Moore, formerly of The Regis School, Bognor, showed his usual grit and determination to finish ninth with 5,278 points for the decathlon.

In difficult conditions for pole vaulting, Moore managed 3.60m, some way short of his best of 4m-plus.

The Chichester athlete showed his mettle in the hurdles by getting to his feet after crashing into one of the barriers and doing a forward roll. A spirited 1500m in 4.41min, the fastest of the day, cemented Moore’s place in the top ten.
