Mussels need to be tighter at the back

SHOREHAM Football Club have to plug the hole in their defence to have any chance of continuing their defence of the John O'Hara League Cup at Eastbourne Town on Saturday.

After Saturday's defeat at Sidley, Mussels have now conceded 11 goals in their last three games and 27 in their last 11 games since they kept a clean sheet in their 3-0 victory over Oakwood in October. Their other two shut-outs this season came in their first two games, against Horsham YMCA in the Norman Wingate Trophy and against Rye in the league.

Joint-manager Jason Rutherford said: "We need to stop conceding so many soft goals. We used to be able to shut up shop when we were winning but now don't seem able to do that.

"Our aim is to try to retain the trophy but it's going to be hard '” we are going to one of the best two sides in the league.

"With us, though, you never know what you are going to get. Everyone knows that on our day we can beat anyone but, at the moment, we are only having our day once every 10 games."
