Saxons captain Paddy Cornish believes it is vital his side does not drop points against fellow relegation contenders in South Hockey League Kent/Sussex - Regional 2.

“They’re must win games,” said Cornish, ahead of the visit from Canterbury to Horntye Park tomorrow (Saturday). “We’ve put in decent performances against the bigger sides, but now we need to start picking up points against the teams in and around us.”

Cornish felt that Saxons were unfortunate not to come away with at least a point from the 3-2 loss away to fourth-placed Crawley last weekend having battled back well after going two goals behind.

“We were gutted to not get anything from the match,” he added. “The umpiring was also a bit questionable. We pushed hard but it just didn’t happen - we were unfortunate to lose. Crawley were a very physical team but we’re improving every week and go into every game thinking we can get some points.”

Standings (played-points): 1 Blackheath & OE 8-19, 2 Brighton & Hove II 8-16, 3 Lewes II 8-16, 4 Crawley 7-16, 5 King’s & Alleyn’s 7-14, 6 Sevenoaks II 8-10, 7 Mid-Sussex 8-10, 8 Cliftonville 6-6, 9 Sutton Valence II 7-6, 10 SOUTH SAXONS 7-5, 11 Canterbury III 8-0.
