Sixteen clubs from Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex were represented in the annual Secretary and Vice-Captains’ Fellowship Trophy. This is the ideal opportunity for vice-captains to meet each other before they take up their appointments in the new year, and for the secretaries to put a face to the persons they will be dealing with over the phone.

This was achieved in a relaxed atmosphere known so well at Bognor. George McMenemy and Wayne Brakstone from Meon Valley Golf Club were winners of the trophy with 44 points.

Second were Rob Henderson and David James from Lee-on-the-Solent on 42, with John Pine and Andrew Chettle (Copthorne) third on 40.

There was considerable celebration in the clubhouse after Norman Elsby, playing off nine, achieved the 274-yard dog-leg sixth in one. His ball found its way through a small gap in the thick 40ft trees which protect the green and ended up in the hole. Elsby was delighted, admitting it was a very unusual manner in which to get a hole in one.
