Roger Smith appeared in three finals, winning the 3 wood against John Harris by just one shot but losing the Backbone Trophy to David Green, who after many years of trying finally lifted a trophy when he made a four on the last end to snatch it 21-19.

There were more new names in the Men’s Pairs where Bob Mitchell, aided by the experience of Keith Jackson, just edged out debutant Stewart Hall and Dick Goodman. Bob, with wife Deryn, had more success in the Mixed Pairs where they made their handicap advantage tell , holding on against the rapidly closing Anne Clifford and Brian Truran.

The Endeavour Trophy saw two new finalists as Margaret Mercer won against Linda Witcher.

Elsewhere there were more familiar names amongst the winners and losers.

Barbara Awcock won both the Yardstick and 2 Wood, beating Bridget Parr and Gill Welsh respectively, and Jenny Goodman overcame Anne Sayers in the 4 Wood.

The Ladies Championship was a close affair before Brenda Davies eased away from Kathy Green to win 21-14.

David Welsh added to a long list of trophy wins by beating Fred Reynolds in the Creaton Cup, while Keith Jackson put yet more cups in his cabinet, beating Tony Gough and Roger Smith in the 2 and 4 Wood competitions.

Thankfully most of the Finals were played in bright sunshine and on a green that bowled remarkably well considering that it had rained for 24 hours prior to start time.

The day was rounded off by a presentation and buffet.
