New gym stars are Bourne at Sussex event

GYMNASTS from Southbourne enjoyed success at the Sussex 2011 floor and vault championships.

Many were taking part for the first time, including Eleanor Pack.

Having moved into the squad only recently, she finished fifth on floor in an age group featuring 34 gymnasts. Juliette Wergen was neat and tidy on the floor and vault.

In the eight-years novice group, India Anderson finished joint first on vault and third overall.

Issi Ware was joint second on floor and fifth overall, while Imogen Laurence and Nancy Gates showed talent for the future.

Gymnasts who had moved up to intermediate level competed well, with Alexandra Shergold finishing ninth, Pippa Madden seventh and Megan Ward third overall, third on vault and first on floor.

Her floor score was joint sixth of the 293 gymnasts taking part on the day, an excellent achievement considering many of the gymnasts were aged 15 or older.

In the boys’ competition, Ryan Thorn finished fourth, only 0.03 off a medal. Morgan Sturt came fifth with new skills on floor.

Another two gymnasts who had moved up a level from last year into the advanced group were Chloe Wileman, who became the age eight and nine overall Sussex champion, and Freya Chandler, who came second on floor.

At the same level for those aged ten and 11, Lindsey Hart came fifth in a tight scoring group.

The Southbourne gymnasts finished within 2.15 of each other.

Annie Gates, Charlotte Horner and Dani Thorn performed new floor routines and Lindsey Hart, Caitlyn Odin and Laura Hayes had new floor routines and new vaults.

In the 12-14 advanced group, Jade Bailey came second on vault and sixth overall.

Rebecca Wilson came seventh on floor and Taylor Sycamore and Meghan Scott gave solid performances with new floor routines.

Megan Flynn and Pippy Dickin were competing for the first time in Southbourne’s squad and finished on the same overall scores with promising performances.

Molly Mitchell took bronze in her age group, where Phoebe Duncan-Duggal finished seventh and Lauren Ware eighth on vault.

Anna Foye was confident in her first competition.

The gymnasts are now looking forward to the Wendy Lewis club championships, their internal club contest.

After that the squad have three competitions in March, two in April, three in May, two in June and two in July.
