NEW HIGHWAY CODE COULD AFFECT HORSE RIDERS

HORSE riders are being asked to help block last minute amendements to the new Highway Code, which could adversely affect horses and riders. The new code could be in force in August unless something is done.

But BHS director of access, safety and welfare, Mark Weston says that some of the suggested amendments have apparently been ignored.

He said: "If the Code goes through, it will forbid riding two horses abreast on narrow and busy roads and when riding round bends. It will also esclude horses from cycle tracks.

"There can be many valid reasons for riding two abreast- groups of riders, nervous horses, novice riders and defensive riding on winding country lanes where there is insufficient room for a car to pass a single horse safely."
