Newick 1st XI out of league

NEWICK Football Club have withdrawn their 1st XI from the premier division of the Mid Sussex League. The 2nd XI will continue to play in division five.

Chairman Ray Smith said: 'It's a sad day for the club, which is over 100 years old, but we felt that in our current situation it would not be fair to continue in the premier division.

'In my 20 years as chairman we have always been in the premier or first division and we thought we would be okay this season when we had 44 players signed up for the two teams at the start.

'However, some have drifted away to other clubs, others are away travelling and long-term injuries have further depleted the squad.

'Now we have the bare nucleus and we have had to make this decision. Village sides are finding it hard to attract players these days.

'There is a glimmer of hope as the Newick and Chailey Colts have some good youngsters and we are hoping some will come through to play for us. Maybe in a couple of years we will be able to press for a higher status.

'We are restricted to including two regular first-team players in the division five side for the remainder of the season.'

Newick 1st XI's record has been expunged from the league tables as they failed to play 70 per cent of their matches.
