No capital punishment but West Sussex get better of London

In their final game of the inter-county championship, West Sussexwere hoping to do well enough to finish third.

They started well, winning three games in the first session but could manage only one win in the second session to be level at 8-8 at lunch.

The third session was a repeat of the first with three wins and bonus points in both disciplines but, looking for two wins in the final session for the points needed to put them in third spot, they could managed only one win and no bonus points – so finished level at 20-20 but just shaded the overall shots 177-171.

In the singles, Crablands’ Martin Hunt won 15-11 and lost 13-6. In the pairs, Crablands’ Joyce Abel won 17-8 and 16-11.

In the triples, Southbourne’s John Hardy won 10-9 and 17-9. In the fours, Southbourne’s Audrey and Rodney Bull with The Martlets’ Ivan Salmon and Lavant’s Dominic May lost 11-5 and 8-7, while Lavant’s Ray Harding and Southbourne’s Dave Walter lost 9-8 and 15-3.

West Sussex B entertained Surrey in a friendly and shared the points in the first session but managed only a win and a draw in the second session to trail 9-7 at lunch.

The afternoon was a repeat of the morning with points shared in the third session and a win and a draw in the fourth session but West Sussex could take the bonus points only in the pairs and ended up with a slightly-disappointing loss by 24-16.

In the singles, Crablands’ Mollie Back lost 21-3 and won 18-12. In the pairs, Bognor’s Pam Andrews won 13-10 and lost 15-11 while the Bognor pairing of Betty Williams and Marlene Steel won 13-12 and 13-9.

In the triples, Lavant’s Jackie Lee lost 14-6 and won 9-6 while Lavant’s Rob Peirce and Peter Whale drew 9-9 and 10-10. In the fours, Bognor’s Clive Andrews won 12-6 and lost 10-9.

ARUN

Each year Arun Indoor Bowling Club hosts the Fullers Trophy, which is sponsored by Fullers Brewery Ltd.

A total of 88 club members were selected at random to form 22 teams.

Starting at 9am, teams play a maximum of eight ends or for an hour, whichever is first, over four games.

They get two points for a win and one for a draw. In the event of a draw an average score is totted up to decide who goes through.

This years winners were Vic May, Terry Aylward, Bobby Bonnar and Frances Downing, ahead of second-placed Matt Bonnar, Olive Silva, R Keele and Alan Stewart.

Third place went to Graham Herrington, M Adams, Hannah Down and R Carpenter and the booby prize was won by G Cooke, J Lindley, L Saddler and S Hyde.

Keith Hellyer and Ricky Hobbs organised and ran the event.

Arun128 Chichester 130

Arun entertained Chichester to an indoor match.

The match started with most of the Chichester rinks winning their first ends. By halfway, Arun were edging in front – but they were pipped at the post on the last end.

Matt Bonnar was commended for the encouragement he gave his Chichester team.

Southbourne advanced to the quarter-finals of the West Sussex plate competition with a good win away to Horley Kestrels.

They won on both mats and by 30 shots overall. In the next round Southbourne will be away to Arundel.

Scores: Audrey Bull, Andy Smith, Dave Walter & Rod Bull (s) won 23-8; Karen Alner, John Hardy, Rob Armstrong & Dave Alner (s) won 26-11.

HUNSTON

Hunston 29 Donnington 39

Hunston played their first match of the new year and had an enjoyable afternoon despite a defeat.

Scores: T Hack, C Butler S Clay lost 20-13; D Greenfield, P Guyatt, A Harle, A Hack lost 19-16.
