No golf in the Olympics? No-one told Bognor's golfing ladies

Everyone who wished to enter the gates were immediately in awe of the security guards with their batons and handcuffs ... and black high heels.

The flag flew, the torches flamed and Olympic rings were everywhere. Bob Weeks turned on the Games anthems, an Olympic quiz and costumes all made it a true celebration of London 2012.

Best costume was Lesley Murray’s, while cleaning ladies and gold-wreathed Grecian godesses won the prizes - and eventually a game of golf was played.

Nearest the pins were struck by Chris Puddicombe and Jenny Bartlett.

The bronze medals were won by L Harbutt, J Eder, S Doughty and J Phillmore on countback from E Beresford, S Redmond, J Weeks and E Quinton. Silver medalists were L Watson, N Vincent, S Stonham and P Etntecott.

The golden girls were G Harris, J Salt, D Pratt and D Thomas.

M Hardy and E Morris both had twos on the tenth and helped their team score well. Players went home with Chariots of Fire ringing in their ears – for several days.

July was highly successful for the veterans’ section at Bognor as they won all but one of their seven matches. Four were away and in five games they completed the double.

On a testing course with wet, boggy areas, Bognor were delighted to win their away game at Waterlooville 5½-2½. Best win of the day was the 6&5 by Mike Oates and Graham Lucas.

The away game at Petersfield was won 5–3.

There was a very close game away at Ham Manor which was won 4½-3½.

Three of the matches were halved. Although the home members complained bitterly about the rough, the greens were lightning fast.

There was an excellent 6-2 win at Worthing.

A total of 26 teams of four took part in the Shanklin & Sandown Vase, an 18-hole Stableford event on three-quarters handicap, with the best three scores to count.

The Bognor team of club captain Alistair Murray, Norman Lee, Simon Watts and James Maclean won on countback with 103 points – the first time a Sussex Club had won the trophy.

The following week the Bognor veterans, captained by John Owen, made their annual pilgrimage to the Isle of Wight to Shanklin & Sandown. The home side won 5-3.

Fourteen took part in the Junior President’s Cup 36-hole competition. Jake Stoneham was the winner with 43 points in the morning and 41 in the afternoon. Runner-up was Jack Taylor with 80. Hayley Mackay was third on 77 on countback from Tom Stoneham.

Winner of the over-28 handicaps was Bradley Dod-man, second was Fraser Gamblin.

After a 2–2 draw, the match against Mid Sussex in the John Bury Plate went to play-off holes. That was won by Jordan Vincent and Tom Stoneham, with Stoneham holing a 15ft put on the first.

Bognor juniors are through to a quarter-final against Hassocks on September 2.

The other members of the team were Jason Cullen, Jake Stoneham, Ryan Breach, Scott Bingham, Marcus Embleton and George Bingham.

The juniors lost their West Sussex League game against Hill Barn 4-2. Bognor are still leading the league but Hill Barn are second with a match in hand.

Twelve juniors took part in the Citeog Cup, a three-clubs-and-putter Stableford. The winner was Jack Taylor after a play-off with Scott and George Bingham.

Fourteen played in the Tartan Trophy sponsored by Dawn and Ian Mackay, a scratch competition, as the main event and medal.

The winner was Hayley Mackay with a gross score of 83, 11 over-par off the ladies’ card. Tom Stoneham was second with 82, 12 over par off the men’s card.

Third was Jack Taylor with 83. Jack was also winner of the nett event with a score of 70.

Winner of the over-28 handicaps was Ben Taylor with 38. Nearest the fifth was Bradley Dodman and Mathew Kissell was nearest the tenth.
