No Johnny Depp - but Cap'n Edwina is ready for the high tees

Paraded on to the first tee by vice-captain Nicki Vincent in a golf buggy converted into the Black Pearl, magnificently made by Richard Beresford, son James, son-in-law David and Vic Vincent.

Past lady captain Denise Duquemin (guard) and golf pro Matthew Kirby (Jack Sparrow) looked the part in superb costumes made by Wendy Johnson. The committee ladies helped create the scene and thanks go to Chichester Festival Theatre for the props and Edwina’s daughter Carly and daughter in-law Steph, who provided refreshments while 82 ladies played a team competition in windy conditions.

The winners were Lyne Watson, Sara Stoneham, Denise Pratt and Hayley MacKay.

n Thirty-eight members played in the Daily Mail Foursomes Medal. The winners were Andy Frankling and Andy Weir with an excellent nett score of 65. In January they will learn who they will play in the next round.

Second were Ian Paine and JJ Stephenson with 70. Alan Enticott and Ron Stevens were third on 71, Nick Jackson and Rob Gilbert fourth on 71.5.

Fourteen juniors took part in the Chase Wheeler scratch event for low handicaps and Stableford for all competitors, sponsored by Keith Fisher.

Winner of the trophy was Ryan Breach with a gross 76 ahead of Tom Stoneham with 79 and Hayley Mackay with 87.

Max Littleboy won the Stableford with 41 points. Mitchell Cane was runner-up with 37 on countback from Davis Harris.

Nearest the fifth pin was James Woosley, nearest the tenth was Megan Tinson and Jake Stoneham was nearest the 16th in two.

The juniors beat Crowborough Beacon in the semi-final of the John Bury Plate played at Worthing. Jordan Vincent and Tom Stoneham lost the opening game 6&5 but a great 5&3 win by Max Littleboy and James Woosley, and Marcus Embleton and Matt Wood coming back from two down with four to play to halve their match, raised Bognor’s hopes.

Jake Stoneham and Ryan Maskell won 2&1, securing Bognor’s place in the final to be played against Worthing at Ifield this Sunday.

Bognor junior vice-captain Hayley Mackay captained the West Sussex League junior girls’ team which included Megan Tinson (Bognor), three girls from Worthing and one from Ham Manor, playing in the regional finals of the British Girls’ Inter League competition at Burhill GC.

The West Sussex team won by more than 15 shots, beating South Devon. They now go forward to play in the national finals at Colchester this weekend.

CHICHESTER

The ladies’ annual mixed competition for the Barnett Salver was played in mixed weather. The eventual winners were Lisa Mitchelmore and Rob Murray with 53, ahead of Kathy Donohoe and Sean Farnes with 51 and Maggie Brand and Tommy Stakim with 47.

The Daily Mail Foursomes was played over two days to allow Tuesday and Saturday ladies to take part.

Eventual winners were Kathy Donohoe and Sang Porter with 78 points. Second were Caroline Hawkes and Maggie Brand with 82 and third were Elaine Fell and Jeannie Blackman with 85.

Alongside the foursomes, two teams of ladies braved heavy rain to play a waltz competition. The winning team were Pauline Beale, Trisha Robertson and Wendy Jeffrey with 76; second were Sue Bond, Yvonne Leaver and Jennifer Fidler with 68.

COWDRAY PARK

Cowdray Park seniors and ladies combined for their second match of the year, with teams consisting of two seniors and two ladies playing off full handicap with the three best scores to count.

A shotgun start involved each team teeing from an allocated tee. Rain started to fall and increased in intensity until, by the end of play, some greens were under water.

The winning team came in with an excellent score of 120, and they were given a warm reception when it was noticed all four were seniors. Two ladies dropped out and, as there were no lady substitutes available, two seniors made up the numbers. The winning team comprised John Doran, Peter Laws, Alan Richardson and Phil Pett.

The runners were Paul Owen, Tony Castley, Marilyn Davis and Jane Holden with 115 points despite losing their way at the end of the round. Marilyn produced the shot of the day when holing her bunker shot at the par-three ninth for a Her husband Cliff claimed the prize for nearest the pin on the 17th, and Joyce Fanshawe claimed a similar prize on the 11th.

John Doran scored four birdies and David Heard and Paul Owen each scored three - no mean feat for single-figure handicappers.

Prizes were presented by seniors’ captain Bill Hummerston and ladies’ captain Polly Davenport.

Cowdray Park seniors completed their season of homes games, as they did the away games, with a comfortable win. This time by 6½-1 ½ in the rearranged fixture against Betchworth Park - completing the double for Cowdray, following their away win earlier in the year.

The match started disappointingly for the home side with a defeat for the outgoing match manager Mike Pratt and replacement Brian Brockhurst by 3&2 by the in-form duo of Roy Woodward and Paul Holt.

Brockhurst provided the highlight of the day when he holed his bunker shot on the third for a birdie.

The biggest margin win of the day came from the home side’s pair of Trevor Edwards and George Crouch, courtesy of five consecutive pars on the back nine.

It ended another successful year for Cowdray seniors, who won 18 of their 23 home matches.

n Despite torrential overnight rain, Cowdray Park was in excellent condition for the seniors’ monthly Stableford.

Overall winner, with 42 points, was Peter Laws, winning his second competition since joining the club at the start of the year. He has reduced his handicap to 16.

Second place in division one went to seniors’ newcomer Nick Austin with 41 points. Third place on countback went to Dave Hirons from Dave Lucking and seniors’ captain Bill Hummerston.

Winner of division two with 40 points was first-time winner John Barrett from big-hitting Philip Singer. Third was John Start (39) from Wally Mitchell on 38, on countback from Dave Darby.

Only three twos were scored, from among the 74 players, all in division one - by Pat Harrison, Dave Hirons and Dave Lucking.

The captain’s charity, the Mary How Trust, benefitted to the tune of £231.

n Forty ladies played in the annual Lady Captain v Vice Captain’s matchplay event. The teams are drawn and this is always keenly-fought.

Playing in pairs using a greensomes format, it was clear from the beginning the captain’s team, in pink, were going to be hard to beat, winning the first two matches.

The vice-captain’s team, wearing blue, put up a good fight but were beaten 6&4.

AVISFORD PARK

The winter Breakfast Plate was played with the winning of Chris Wall, Roger Boorer and Jayson Walker scoring 81 points. Runners-up on the same total were Grant Walker, Lloyd Walker and Daniel McGuinness.

Avisford seniors entertained Rookwood for the last match of the season - a close-fought contest ended with a narrow 3½-2½ win by the visitors.

The club monthly Stableford division-one winner was Garry Spight with 37 points. In division two Billy Rayner won with 40 points.

The senior Stableford competition division-one winner was Bob Boulter with 38 points and in division two it was Peter Brown with 39.
