All hands – and tractors – to the ploughs for match

It shows his father, Michael, now 92, ploughing with an old Fordson Major tractor in the late 1950s.

Mr Dutton said: “I remarked on how neat the ploughing looked and asked if he’d ever entered a ploughing match.

“He laughed at this and remarked that his only goal when ploughing was to get the brown side on top, a trait that I seem to have inherited!”

Mr Dutton is a member of the Hurstpierpoint and District Ploughing Society, who will be taking part in a ploughing match Trusslers Hill Farm, Blackstone Farm Henfield BN59TA on Saturday (October 3), from 9am.

He said: “There will be a whole range of ploughing, dating from the very old 1920s, to the very new, driven entirely by satellite.

“There are many other rural attractions including the ancient art of hedge laying, horse ploughing, tractor rides, a novelty show and even donkey ploughing – providing we can find enough carrots!

“Naturally, being a rural event, there will be food on sale and my favourite, real ale. A great day out for all the family.”
