Archduke assassinated - July 1914
The trigger that sparked off the first world war actually happened on June 28 and the County Times carried the news in its next issue, the first one in July.
As with many local papers 100 years ago, the County Times carried some international news but the excerpt below is part of a lengthy report, revealing that even in Horsham this story was deemed very significant.
“The Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro Hungarian Throne, and his wife were assassinated on Sarajevo on Sunday morning.
