As with many local papers 100 years ago, the County Times carried some international news but the excerpt below is part of a lengthy report, revealing that even in Horsham this story was deemed very significant.

“The Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro Hungarian Throne, and his wife were assassinated on Sarajevo on Sunday morning.

“The royal visitors had just left the Town Hall on their way to the garrison hospital, when a Serb fired two shots into ther car, one mortally wounding the Archduke in the head and the other killing the Archduchess.”
