Did you play against Garry Sobers at East Preston?

ONE of the best all-round cricketers in the world, Garry Sobers, is pictured playing at East Preston Cricket Club in 1960.

These pictures were sent in by Eric Sweeting, who played against East Preston himself but was too young to play alongside Sir Garry.

They were taken in 1960 when Sir Garry played as part of the Shepperton Cricket Club team, a regular opponent at East Preston.

“He, of course, became the best all round cricketer in the world, and is still probably the best there has ever been,” added Eric.

“These photos came to light when I was going through some of my late father’s effects. He was treasurer at Shepperton for many years.”

Eric, who now lives in Weybridge, is hoping older members will remember playing at East Preston, or the boys in the photo will recognise themselves.

“Shepperton played East Preston for many years, and Garry played for Shepperton several times over a two-year period,” he added.

“He was introduced, I believe, through his contact with West Indian Wanderers, who Shepperton used to play in the 1960s and 1970s.”

A Shepperton player for many years, Eric remembers playing at East Preston himself several times.
