Mrs Laughton – the teacher who wrote to the Tooth Fairy

Dawn Laughton was a special kind of teacher – the kind who wrote an emergency letter to the Tooth Fairy for one of her pupils.

This picture was published in the Mid Sussex Times in July 1988 and shows Mrs Laughton with some of the children as they bade her farewell on the day she retired.

She had clearly made an impression at Lindfield Infants School during her 14 years and was treated to songs, music and reading in assembly before she set up home in Somerset with her husband, the vicar of Plumpton.

The youngsters read out their own accounts of life with Mrs Laughton, and her kindness was a running theme.

One child said: “Once I swallowed my right front tooth and Mrs Laughton wrote me a note so I could put it under my pillow.”

The school presented Mrs Laughton with a garden seat, flowers and a card signed by all the children, which she no doubt treasured in the years which followed.
