Nostalgia: Feed the birds and spelling for cause

Kind-hearted kids were making the headlines in January 1987 as they did their bit for wildlife and other children.

These two pictures were taken from the County Times archive.

The first shows students from Class 1A at Tanbridge House School who, under the guidance of teacher Ghislaine Loiseau, had raised £100 for Mannings Heath Children’s Home with a sponsored spell.

The top fundraisers were 12-year-old Lee Holton, who raised £13, and 11-year-old Teresa Light, who raised £8.

Over in Warnham, two young brothers were helping to ensure ducks, swans and other birds had enough food to survive what was proving to be a particularly nippy winter.

The pond had frozen over and six-year-old Duncan Codd joined his eight-year-old brother Jamie and members of the Horsham Natural History Society to feed them.

The society provided 3cwt of wheat to go with donations of bread from local supermarkets after warden Ian Brooker noticed a drop in the number of birds at the pond.

The boys are pictured with conservation officer David Codd, Mr Brooker and society member Ted Palmer.
