NOSTALGIC SOCCER MATCH

ALBION fans will be able to wallow in nostalgia on Sunday afternoon as heroes of yesteryear take on Newhaven in a special match put on by the town's football club.

The game at the Fort Recreation Ground kicks off at 2pm and it is hoped that a raft of notable Seagulls will take the field. Listed to feature in the Brighton and Hove Veterans' side are John Byrne and John Robinson.

After the Albion, Byrne went on to play for Sunderland in the FA Cup final, showing his usual skill. At the Goldstone he had a fantastic understanding with Mike Small and was instrumental in Albion securing a 2-2 draw at Anfield in the cup.

John Robinson is a Newhaven boy through and through having gone to Tideway School. Like Byrne he went on to great things being a full Welsh international and playing for Charlton.

And the Recreation Ground will also see another local lad, Ian Chapman, a classy full back hailing from Woodingdean who impressed good judges even as a 16-year-old.

Another wonderful talent is Saltdean boy Darren Freeman who had to give up the game early.

He will be remembered for his flowing locks and scoring the very first goal at Withdean.

George Parris and Dean Wilkins may not be fit to play but Newhaven are hoping they will also be in attendance.
