Not our best performance - but I'm happy we're through

WE'VE played much better and not won '“ but we're delighted to get through.

That was Mick Jenkins' assessment after the Rocks survived a potential upset at bitterly-cold Ramsgate.

Bognor weathered the early storm by the Ryman League premier-division strugglers and a goal in each half by Michael McEnery and Duncan Jupp '“ his free-kick a reward for the fans who have pitched in to pay his wages '“ saw the Rocks into the first round.

Jenkins was pleased and said: "It was a good, professional job. Our goalkeeper and defence were outstanding and there were a few putting their bodies on the line.

"It wasn't our best performance '“ we've played better and only drawn with Bromley, Thurrock and Weston '“ but on a horrible, cold, windy day we ground out the result.

"We've had four wins in cup competitions now '“ we just need to transfer that into the league."

Jenkins had particular praise for keeper Chris Tardif, who he said had been consistently outstanding since joining the club, and new boys Michael Byrne, who made his debut alongside Sam Peace in the centre of defence, and McEnery.

"Chris has kept his head down and shown a great attitude, and saved us a few times again in this game.

"And I was pleased with both Byrne and McEnery. Both have given us something more at a time when we've needed it."
