On-song Davis strikes again

DEFENDER James Davis notched his third goal in as many games to gift Steyning Town Football Club three valuable points at his previous club, local rivals Storrington, on Boxing Day.

Town scored inside 15 minutes when Davis latched onto a well-worked Sean Hourigan free-kick. Davis, the skipper for the day, had originally struck the bar from six yards but made no mistake when he tapped in the rebound.

The visitors had chances to extend their lead in the first half, and went close firstly through James Pargetter. The forward's right flank cross-shot skimmed across the bar, much to the relief of Swans' keeper Gary Elliott.

Then, from the opposite flank, Greg Hearne attempted the same acute-angled effort. This time, though, Elliott was forced to stretch and tip the ball over. The hosts held on.

Elliott was called into action once more, when a combination of Andy Long and Alan Tucker '” Storrington's two centre-backs '” brought down Hourigan inside the box on 68 minutes.

Right-back Davis stepped up to pull the trigger from the penalty spot and forced an outstanding two-handed save from Elliott. Storrington's outfield players owed everything to Elliott for keeping them in the game at this point.
