The winner of last year’s Chichester and district Youth Sport Achievement Award – voted for by Chichester Observer readers – has been busy at the start of the new season in the Alps, racing in Chamonix in the Anglo Scottish championships and Les Deux Alpes for the British independent schools championships.

This week he has been taking part in the British Alpine Racing Ski Club championships in Tignes in France’s Northern Alps.

McCall is delighted to be selected for the GB under-16 team at the end of January for the international Ski-Interkriterium Races in Ričky, Czech Republic.

He trained over Christmas and new year with the Club des Sports in La Clusaz, where many of the junior French team train.

Last year was a big one for McCall. In November, he raced in his first international indoor event in Holland.

He spent a couple of weeks training last summer in Zermatt with guest coaching from some of the GB team including Chemmy Allcott, Jai Geyer and Dougie Crawford.

McCall’s mum Therese said: “Oscar has to work hard to juggle his school work with his skiing and training commitments. He is lucky enough to have strong support from his school, Churcher’s College in Petersfield, and the British Ski Academy, where tutors work with him to ensure his stays up to date with his work.

“As there is very little funding for the sport in the UK, Oscar has to raise funds a lot for himself and rely on the generosity of family and friends to help him continue his sport.

“He has recently started looking for sponsorship, which is very difficult in the current economic climate. He was thrilled recently to receive a prize from the Rotary Club of Chichester Priory for winning the Youth Sport Achievement Award, but any other offers of sponsorship would be gratefully received.”
