Hastings Athletic Club successfully hosted the thrd lower age group Youth Development League match at their home track for six clubs from the South East, writes Chloe Le Fay.

Across the track throws, jumps, and runs were on the go, with many children trying events for the first time. This included hurdles in which a couple of the girls showed a great talent. Considering the club only had 13 athletes competing they still managed to come 3rd overall due to some impressive performances. Nate Cahill (U15) was the leader of the 800m by a good distance for the whole two laps, but was just one second off his previous PB of 2.06 gained at the recent Sussex U15 league fixture. He now ranks 27th in the country after only running it three times this season. Cahill was also first in the 300m which was a PB 39:3sec.

Lucienne Simkiss-Day continued her smashing debut season, leading the 1200m with ease the whole way only to be caught out in the final 10m. She had a PB in the high jump, an event in which she's really starting to shine, giving her a grade two AAA standard (England Athletics Amateur Association). The following day she competed in the IAPS National competition and came second. In the same event Henry Cooke shaved 5.5s off his PB in the 800m was seventh overall

Lily Clements had a PB in the 800m and came first in the B string and second in the hurdles, which she'd never tackled before, and third in the 75m, just outside her PB. Amy Hunneman had a huge PB in the shot put improving from 3.83m to 4.17m, a result she was very pleased with as it was in very windy conditions. There was a great atmosphere for the teams and spectators, and it was also so nice to see such a busy clubhouse after it had stood closed for so long through Covid.

Healthy snacks were being appreciated as much as the bacon sarnies that enticed many a spectator. The next YDL meeting is on July 30. If you think you child would like to try an event like this please contact the club. They especially need boys to join the talent we have to fill more relay teams.
