The top four players all carded 39 points and each of the first three posted identical back nines of 20. But it was 12-handicap Steve Parker’s last six holes that made him the winner over new recruit Paul Lamberty.

He shaded Roy Boud for runner-up honours on a back three countback leaving John Elliott to settle for fourth place.

Parker’s round included three birdies and with three competitions now completed his win moved him into second position in the seniors’ Order of Merit table, a point behind John Bailey.

The ladies were also in cup action as they played in pairs for the Blunt Cups.

The trophies, donated by Rose Blunt, the club’s first ladies’ captain, are contested in St Andrews foursomes with partnerships based on higher and lower handicaps.

Both players tee off but decide beforehand who will play the second shots on odd or even holes before continuing on the traditional alternate shot basis.

Rosemary Martin and Rosemary Williams, playing off a combined 22, dovetailed impressively for 39 points with five pars on their card and only one blob.

Meriel Jolley and Viv Reed were second on 35 with Doreen Dinnage and Emma Francis third a point behind.

The club also staged the MJLS Shield, their inter-section team trophy, which this year resulted in a convincing win for the seniors with the ladies in second place.
