It was touch and go whether the event would go ahead but it did – before December’s new lockdown restrictions came into force.

Each race involved a lap of 5k and two HBAC runners took part in the 10k. First home was Mike Cathcart, who completed his run in an excellent 38.47, putting him eighth in his age category.

Cathcart had been boosted in the lead-up to the race, like many HBAC athletes, by the work of the club coaching team led by Dave Bateman and Daniel Alloway.

Nicola Jarrett also ran the 10k, and she achieved a PB of 50:48, putting her 21st in her age category.

The Goodwood marathon took in 11 laps of the circuit, not only physically challenging but mentally exhausting.

Two of HBAC’s finest entered – and finished in some style. Dave Jarrett and Luke Brocks both finished in just under 2hr 45mins, Jarrett in 2.42.13 and Brocks in 2.43.12, third and sixth in their age group. These times don’t happen without months of hard work, training plans and a desire to achieve.

Peters ran superbly and completed the four-lap course in 1:39, 12th female and fifth in her age group.

Competing in the 5k, Nicola Jarrett finished in 24.44, fourth in her age category. Dave Jarrett took on the 5k, finishing third in 16:11 for a PB.

Other club members got into the festive spirit. Janet Govan and Rita Smalley took part in a 5k charity Santa Dash, while coaching assistant Annalisa Alexander took to the Devil’s Punch Bowl in her Father Christmas outfit for a Santa run, following up with a festive run round Blackdown with fellow club runners Caroline Lawler, Tina Laing and Sarah Caudrey.
