Brilliant Beacon swimmers land Sussex honours

Beacon Swimming Club members were pleased to welcome Simon Taylor, president of Sussex County ASA, and Brian DeVal, Chairman of Sussex County ASA to the club.

Taylor presented several of the Beacon swimmers with the awards they achieved at the Sussex County Swimming Championships which took place at the K2, Crawley earlier this year.

Marcus Hayden was awarded his trophy for winning the 10 years boys’ age group and Annabelle Souter for winning the 13 years girls’ age group.

Many excellent swims were recorded across the club and it was a great achievement to have six of their 12-and-under swimmers selected for the Sussex County ASA Development Squad.

Those selected were Thomas Brignell, George Souter, Anna Charters, Michael Dooris, Isabelle Hayden and Marcus Hayden.

They were presented with their Sussex Development squad swimming caps.

The chairman of Beacon Swimming Club said: “It is great to see the achievements of so many swimmers at the club, which despite the lockdowns in 2020 has a record number of members and continues to go from strength to strength.”

Whilst the strict lockdown in the spring has been a setback for the whole swimming community, Beacon Swimming Club were delighted to be back in the pool in July as restrictions eased. The club thankd Freedom Leisure and Wealden District Council for support in getting the pool operational so quickly.

Thanks also went to Holmewood House School who have provided use of their pool, enabling more swimmers the opportunity to train.

With the support of Freedom Leisure and Holmewood House, Beacon Swimming Club have welcomed more than 220 swimmers to the pool since July.

Thanks went to Crowborough Town Council who, through a community grant, have donated £500-plus towards the cost of backstroke wedges. With fundraising by club members and supporters also helping, these wedges are now purchased and will be of huge benefit.

The club have to cease swimming for the next month but online fitness sessions and team building will continue remotely until swimming can resume.
