Chichester Ladies II 1 Southwick Ladies 2

Sussex Ladies Div 1

This home tie against Southwick was always going to be a tough one and that’s how it panned out.

Chichester were on the back foot from the first whistle, Southwick taking every opportunity to attack and push the home side into mistakes, and Chi were not in the game for the first 15 minutes. Southwick made their chances count and although Chi were gradually making headway, the visitors scored. Chi heads didn’t go down and although not playing their best hockey they held firm until half-time.

After a lecture, Chichester started the second period much brighter than their opponents and this yielded dividends when, from a penalty corner, Sarah Jessop struck the ball firmly into the Southwick goal.

Alex Hurd and Vicky Oliver-Catt worked tirelessly in the centre with Julie Abson in goal keeping the score at bay – but inevitable happened and as Chi got tired Southwick popped up with the winner.

It was a disappointing game for the home side but there was evidence of improvement as the game went on. This week Chi have to travel to face leaders Crowborough.

Lewes Lionesses 0 Chichester Canons 8

An away fixture in the Sussex Hockey Girls’ Development League brought a big win for Chichester Canons over Lewes Lionesses.

Having suffered a defeat the previous week, the Canons were keen to make amends and demonstrate their skill and teamwork. However, several of the girls were nursing colds and minor injuries. There were three under 12-year-olds playing, who were smaller than the older Lionesses.

The girls started with a penalty corner. A clean strike by Chelsea Webster was saved by the keeper, but Amelie Hanaran pounced on the rebound to score the openier. Molly McKnight slotted home the second, having gone one on one with the keeper. Ably supported by Phoebe Overton-Smith and Cara Cartmell, McKnight grabbed two.

The second half brought more goals. McKnight put one past the keeper with ease before captain Lucy Campbell was moved forward.

Webster continued her rich form with a lovely goal.

Lewes carved out chances but keeper Jade Collins made great saves. Lucy Thompson was strong at the back.

Jess Overton-Smith and Cara Cartmell combined and set up Maddie Allfrey to make it 7-0. Player of the match Campbell scored her first goal to round off the win.

Canons: Allfrey, Campbell, Cartmell, Collins, Hanrahan, McKnight, J Overton-Smith, P Overton-Smith, Thompson, Webster.
