On Sunday, May 19, Hailsham town centre came alive with runners of all ages for the Hailsham Active running festival, a morning filled with races for all the family, from 1 mile to 10K.

Hailsham Harriers juniors showed the adults how it’s done with George Griffin in his first race, running a sensational 12:24 finishing in third place and first in age. Ryan Pocknell flew home, eighth overall in his first ever 3K race, running a new personal best of 14:28, and Leo Reynolds also running his first race, to finish in 15:07.

Daisy Bowles stormed over the line to take the second place podium spot for the girls whilst running a new personal best time of 15:38. Harley Jeffrey had a sensational run finishing in 15:27 with Henry Griffin 16:38, Poppy Croucher 16:34, Max Leakey 17:23, Ziva Thrower 19:37, Bette Davies 20:35 and Beau Burrett 22:18 all running new personal bests and for many their first their first time racing.

In the 5K event Hailsham’s Chris Doherty raced to third place in 17:18 finishing first in age, with Tina Macenhill second female overall in a rapid time of 22:32 alos finishing first in age. Kelly Tattam ran 24:02, Finley Greck 24:29, Sam Neame 27:01, Shawn Freeborn 30:08, Natassia Garratt 35:32 and Lord Norman Harris 40:03.

In the 10K event Hailsham’s men’s captain, Carl Barton stormed to a first place victory as he ran 39:58, battling his team mate, Dave Garratt over the line with just four seconds between them. Adam Davies who had already ran the 3K event with daughter Bette, finished a strong fifth in 41:02 winning his age category with Oli Paterson an impressive 9th place overall in 44:58.

Along with a Harriers first and second for the men in the 10K, Hailsham ladies, Claire Keith placed first female overall in 45:31 and team mate, Wendy Robson finished second female overall in 45:49.

Darren Broderick ran 46:38, Katie Manley 56:09, Frances Delves 57:37 winning first in age, Emma Power-Hosking in her debut race for the Harriers crossed the line in 58:59, Ian Cant 59:34, Gemma Mulhern 1:00:31 and Jo McGowan 1:01:23.

Plenty of Harriers mum's and dad's also ran with their sons and daughters both in the mile and 3K races, including Arthur Price, Elijah Haddon, Mckenzie Haddon, Shae Haddon and George Chrystie.

Hailsham Harriers would like to say a big thank you to Hailsham Active and their sponsors for putting on another wonderful morning for the town and for bringing this event back to life.

Not all club members could be at the wonderful Hailsham town event as it clashed with a league race in Rye. Twenty-one Harriers took part in the undulating 10-mile race hosted by Nice Work events team, in a bid to defend their Sussex Grand Prix Champions Team title and display their club colours across two towns. Hailsham ladies had great success with Aislinn Darvell taking the overall victory in first place, Alice Denning third, Maria Smith fourth and Helen O'Sullivan fifth.

Full results were: Aislinn Darvell 1:06:37, Alice Denning 1:13:46, Mark Bassett 1:13:57, Maria Smith 1:14:01: Ladies Captain Helen O'Sullivan 1:14:28, Graham Purdye 1:16:29, Chris Little 1:16:58, Robin Warwick 1:17:52, BIG Si, 1:19:14, Fluffy 1:19:32, Katy Reed 1:20:48, Abi Morris 1:23:17, Club Chairman Andy Ruffell 1:27: 35, Steph Bassett 1:27:45, Victoria Little 1:31:04, Ros Daintreee 1:36:23, Kevin Morris 1:42:50, Kirstie Groves 1:43:59, Jayne Morris 1:51:27, Lisa Phillips-Horner 1:51:54, and Robbie Proietti 2:22:57.

Hailsham also picked up first ladies team at Rye along with numerous first place age category awards for Graham Purdye, Aislinn Darvell, Katy Reed, Maria Smith, Ros Daintree and Roberto Proietti. Many Harriers also raced to new 10-mile personal and course bests depsite the challenging route and warm conditions.
