Horsham athletes speed to success in Lewes

Wet and windy conditions greeted the Horsham Blue Star athletes who competed at the Track & Field meeting held at Lewes.

Held in memory of long-time Treasurer of the Sussex County AA, Martin Etchells, this meeting gave many athletes the first opportunity to compete on the track in this Covid-affected season.

Despite the appalling conditions there were some excellent performances.

Held in conjunction with this meeting were the county 3000m championships for all age groups, with Charlie Ferris picking up a bronze medal in the under-15 boys’ race, running a personal best time of 10min 05.11s.sec.

Maisie Boast ran 11.47.81 to finish just outside the medals in fourth place.

Elsewhere Hayley Emerson finished second in the under-17 women’s hammer event where she threw 32.52m to not only set a new personal best but also to set a new club record mark.

Emerson also finished second in the discus where she threw 27.90m.

The under-17 men’s 800m saw Sam Richards comfortably win his race and set a new personal best time of 2.11.28.

In the series of 1500m races there were good runs from Luke Triccas, who ran a personal best 4.20.11 to finish second in his race, and Charlie Beckley, who also finished second in his race, running 4.53.42, which was also a personal best.

In the 100m races, which were all run into a strong headwind, Maddy Way ran an impressive 13.71 in winning her race.
