Horsham's Canterbury tale is one about a handsome win

Horsham thoroughly enjoyed their long trip to Kent, returning top of the table after an excellent 5-0 win over Canterbury Pilgrims and still unbeaten in the league.

The game started quite cagily, with Canterbury attacking with a lot of ball pace, but Horsham looked solid in defence, while Canterbury looked clumsy at the back.

Horsham’s first success came from Zak Chinn after 10 minutes when he picked up a rebound from a save, drew the keeper and netted.

Three minutes later, Sean Pearcy (left) converted a flick from a short corner.

It was 3-0 when Chinn beat the home keeper with a short corner rebound after the ball was parried out.

The fourth was a well worked move, the ball from a short corner finding Chinn near the far postand he completed a classy hat-trick.

Starting the second half with a four-goal cushion, Horsham were under siege by revitalised Canterbury, but keeper Ben Beard was up to the challenge. A superb save two minutes in denied Canterbury and with Beard stopping several flicks from short corners, he was worth two goals.

It was clear the team had learned a lesson after throwing away goals in the 4-4 draw at Gore Court, when they had been four goals to the good. Against Canterbury they soaked up the pressure and controlled the ball in the back field.

There was only one goal in the second half and Horsham had to wait half an hour for it, a great passing move involving five players ending with Harry Wells netting a fine goal.

On Saturday buoyant Horsham return home to welcome Herne Bay (Christ’s Hospital, 1pm).

There was also good news for Horsham Ladiess, who notched up their first win of the season thanks to a strong second-half display at home to Chelmsford.

Georgina Black, CJ White, Remi Briggs and Rosie Boggis scored as Horsham ran out 4-2 winners. On Saturday the ladiesvisit Bromley & Beckenham.
