Mayor launches Worthing Pavilion bowls season - and return is great at Goring

A sunny but slightly chilly day greeted players at Worthing Pavilion Bowls Club.

The club, closed since December in line with the government Covid restrictions, welcomed back members including president Bennie Bennett and Worthing Mayor Cllr Lionel Harman, who expertly opened proceedings by delivering the first wood of this summer’s long-awaited season.

The greens are in superb condition, all as a result of the hard work and dedication from resident greenkeeper Vince, who continues to provide the best playing surfaces in Sussex.

The club is open to new members and proud to host friendly and competitive games for players of all ages and abilities, from local friendly matches and district leagues through to the senior and U25 Sussex county fixtures.

Club officials are proud of their achievements in having players selected for Sussex participation and last year were delighted to have a member selected for the England disability bowls team.

Ages within the club range from ten to 90, friendly coaching is available and disability facilities are in place, showing there are no barriers to playing the sport of bowls.

GORING MANOR

There were broad smiles all round when play resumed for the season at Goring Manor Bowls Club.

For some, this would be their first outing to play bowls in nearly two years. Covid restrictions meant that only 24 players were allowed on the green at any one time, but that did not prevent other members of the club turning up to spectate – fully acceptable as Field Place is a public space.

It was a beautiful day, albeit a bit windy, which nearly wreaked havoc on the gazebo put up to provide tea and biscuits. Goring Manor look forward to a full season of league and friendly play. Encouragingly, new players have joined the club this

year.

Last year the club was enriched by attracting Lorraine Kuhler as a member.

Lorraine is a current England international and Commonwealth Games squad member. This year Keith Fenwick has joined the club. He was an England indoor international. He was also 1988 Worthing Herald sportsman of the year.

On the green, he was the 1992-93 national indoor pairs champion.

After 20 years’ absence Keith has returned to play and has already represented England at over-50 level.

He now returns to competitive outdoor bowls after an absence of 28 years.

The fact he has chosen Goring Manor to make his return to outdoor bowls demonstrates the ongoing reputation of the club and its desire to see continuing development.

However, Goring Manor are not just looking for the top players to join.

A spokesman said: “We are looking for newcomers and returners to the sport to join us.

“We are looking for experienced players who are seeking pastures anew.

“Male or female, young or old, there will be a warm welcome for you at Goring Manor Bowls Club.”
