Run Wednesdays runners complete virtual London Marathon

Conscious of the reduction in funding to charities as a result of many cancelled sporting events so far this year, a group of runners from local running club Run Wednesdays have dedicated their time to running a “virtual” London Marathon.

Emma Trenaman, Angela Vlahopoulos and Jade De Silva all ran their first London Marathon distance in the week leading up to what would have been the 2020 event. The group had been training together since January for the event and were disappointed to learn that it had been cancelled due to the Covid 19 Lockdown.

However eager not to waste their training and to continue raising funds for their chosen charities, St Wilfred’s Hospice and MacMillan Cancer Support, all three succeeded in complete the full 26.2 mile distance over the week using their daily allotted exercise time allowed during the lock down period.

They were joined virtually by fellow runners Hannah Holland, Colin Burbage and Rebecca Parker who had also completed a marathon distance over the week. In support of their efforts, Run Wednesdays coach Danny Garbett gave the team a virtual countdown, and each runner crossed their own finish line.

The three runners joined the Female Run Wednesday’s groups to return to running as adults. With the support of their fellow runners, they developed their love of running (with Jade losing over 4 stones in weight!) and set themselves a target of completing the London Marathon together.

Angela said, “I completed by first marathon in Brighton last year to raise money for St Wilfrid’s where I have been a volunteer for three years. I am very proud to be part of the team running for this wonderful charity that do so much for our local community”.

All three runners are looking to participating in their first London Marathon when the event eventually takes place and to double their fund raising efforts.
