It was a unique occasion, with the final being held under the Club’s new LED floodlights for the first time.

Reigning champions Johan Jooste and Neil Downer returned to the same side of the net after contesting the men’s singles final in the previous week.

As a doubles pair, they had won the tournament for the past four seasons, so Andy Leckie and Simon Underwood knew what they were up against.

The scores belied the action, as Jooste and Downer won comfortably 6-2, 6-1, but they had to fight every inch for their victory.

They become champions for the fifth time, and each have six championships, both having won an extra final with different partners.

Hailsham Tennis Club will continue to play all through the winter as usual, Covid regulations permitting, play being possible due to the all-weather courts and bright new floodlights.
