Wanderers get wheels turning at Thruxton

The Road Time Trials Council Closed Circuit Championships was promoted by Antelope RT at Thruxton motor circuit. Competitors had to complete five laps, totalling 11.7 miles.

Four Lewes Wanderers took part and young Anya Tamplin, racing for URDT, sped round the former airfield five times in 27min 10sec. She was 20th overall female and third fastest aged 18 to 22.

Fourth in the over-40 age group was Sally Turner in 27:28. Another 47 seconds and seven places back was her trianSharp clubmate Lisa Davis, sixth in the same category. Lisa’s husband Brett (trainSharp) was 58th out of 194 men to finish in 24.51.

Darren Haynes was in off-road action in the East Kent Cyclo Cross League - the Grand Prix Alex Paton - held at Astor College, Dover.

Haynes completed half-a-dozen quick laps, but finished a lap behind the victor, 23rd out of 41 finishers.

A trio of Lewes Wanderers were among a field of 44 for the East Sussex Cycling Association’s Firle Beacon race.

Quickest was Joe Benians, 15th in 4.41.6. Dan Street was 19th in 4:54.7 and Ed Tuckley’s 5:22.5 put him 30th. They fell just 0.3 seconds short of beating Southborough & District Wheelers to the team prize.

Benians was 23rd out of 72 in the Brighton Mitre 25-mile time-trial and reduced his PB for the distance to 58.23.

Over the same distance, Brett and Lisa Davis and trainSharp clubmate Sally Turner were near Newmarket for the Road Time Trials Council Circuit Championship.

Brett came off after 20 miles. He wasn’t seriously hurt, but the bike was damaged. Lisa and Sally finished in 1:02:23 and 1:00:54 for ninth and 15th places.
