Packed card sends Fontwell into summer break on high

A fine summer's afternoon packed with eight races won by seven different jockeys and eight trainers brought Fontwell Park's 2015-16 season to an upbeat end.

A good-sized crowd flocked to the course for its final meeting before a two-month break and were rewarded by seeing some excellent contests and by avoiding storms and floods that hit other parts of West Sussex on Tuesday afternoon.

The biggest surprise in terms of results came in the last, the Rabbit Demolition Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, which was won by 40/1 outsider Kingston Mimosa, ridden by James Banks for trainer Mark Gillard.

The two preceding results would also have pleased the bookies as the Westbourne Racing Club Handicap Hurdlewent to Brendan Powell on Newton Geronimo (8/1) and Tom O’Brien, completing a double, rode Paddy The Stout to victory in the Rabbit and Dowling Plant Hire Handicap Chase at 6/1.

There was some success for favourites – three of the first four races, including both divisions of the over-subscribed Westbourne Racing Club Primed for Royal Ascot” Handicap Hurdle – went to the market leaders.

That’s it now for jump-racing fans in West Sussex until a new season starts at Fontwell with Ladies’ Evening on Thursday, August 18.
