The 24-year-old will compete in the 90-minute session as part of his role as the Enstone-based squad’s third and reserve driver.

Palmer, from Southwater, has driven the E23 Hybrid in the last two sessions, at the Red Bull Ring in Austria and at his home race, the British Grand Prix held at Silverstone.

He produced strong performances on both occasions, comparing very well with his team-mate Pastor Maldonado, and recording two 14th place finishes.

The 2.722-mile Hungaroring circuit has been a fruitful hunting ground for Palmer in past seasons - he took victory in the GP2 feature race at the circuit in 2013, and also enjoyed a great battle with then championship rival and current Sauber driver Felipe Nasr in last year’s sprint and feature race, in a decisive weekend in the title battle as he went on to secure the GP2 championship in record-breaking style.

Palmer said: “The Hungaroring is one of my favourite tracks, where I’ve had some of my best races. The team will be fighting for a positive weekend to get back in the points after Silverstone and achieving a good result before the summer break.”

After Hungary, Palmer will drive on the next two consecutive race weekends, at the legendary Spa Francorchamps in Belgium (August 21) and the Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy (September 4).
