Petworth and Bognor anglers reel in another successful year

Petworth & Bognor Angling Club held their annual meeting at the Black Horse, Clymping, and there was a good turnout of members to hear that once again the club were in very good shape '“ with membership at an all-time high.

Match anglers had winners’ trophies presented by club chairman Nigel Chapman, who thanked everyone involved with the smooth running of the club and gave everyone an update on issues concerning various fisheries and a restocking programme.

The club’s match secretary, Steve Simmonds, has finally bowed out of the post after 15 years, during which he kept competitive activities going. All those who attended the matches he arranged must appreciate the hard work and time devoted to this task.

Publicity officer Roger Poole said: “I should know as quite recently I assisted in pegging out the Rother for a match the next day. Clearing swims and walking a good mile of riverbank is something Steve is now pleased to hand over to Mick Greenway.

“He will continue to keep match anglers satisfied from now on, but a bit of help from everyone would be much appreciated.”

With Christmas and new year celebrations gone, the winter season for coarse fishing can often produce some great results.

The fish are in good shape and looking for food but rivers and lakes will now have a lot of natural food so when groundbaiting, bear this in mind – especially the faster-flowing rivers.

When the rivers are in full flow, take care as the banks are slippery and unstable. Try not to fish alone – a dip in the river at this time of year is best avoided.

Everyone who enjoys the lovely two main rivers, the western Rother and Arun, must be aware that the threat of pollution, man-made obstacles and housing developments pose a threat not only to angling but all those who benefit and appreciate the importance of keeping the rivers as clean and free flowing as possible.

The recent formation of the Arun and Rother Rivers Trust is something that will appeal to everyone with an interest in the rivers.

Rivers trusts have been around for a number of years but only recently has one been formed to look after the Arun and Rother.

Working in partnership with the Environment Agency and other trusts, it is hoped all angling clubs can engage further with the new trust as well as other organisations.

Further details will be available soon but Petworth & Bognor Angling Club fully support the trust, as do other anglers, and a series of projects are already in hand that will benefit everyone who cares for these great rivers.

THREE COUNTIES ANGLING LEAGUE

The sixth round of the Three Counties League has been held.

Division A was fished on the Greenhouse Lakes at Cranleigh.

Results: 1 Ash 26pts, 2 Rudgwick B 22, 3 Rother II 19. Indiviuals: 1 Keith Tupman (Team Spirit) 5lb 12oz (mainly carp & roach), 2 Andy Short (Rudgwick A) 3lb 2oz, 3 Ian Davidson (Rother) 2lb 5oz.

Division B was fished on New Pond.

Results: 1 Rother 22, 2 Rother V 20, Jt 3 Rother III & Pollards Hill 18. Individuals: 1 K Hughes (Bognor) 4lb 7oz (roach & skimmers), 2 Wayne Fordham (Rother V) 4lb, 3 Ian Oliver (Rother V) 3lb 6oz.

Division C was fished on Lythe Hill Pond.

Results: Jt 1 Oakhanger B & Stedham B 21, 3 Stedham A 20. Individuals: 1 Alan Cooper (Stedham A) 43lb 1oz (mainly carp), 2 John Anscombe (Stedham A) 31lb 9oz, 3 Steve French (Stedham B) 25lb 12oz.

BOGNOR

Bognor Regis Amateur Angling Society held their last competition of 2011 at Bognor Pier.

Results: 1 Tony Chant, 12 whiting, 4lb 8ozs, 2 Derek Carr, 6 whiting, 3lb 3oz, 3 Wayne Hart, 5 whiting, 2lb 11oz. Junior: Tre Hart, 6 whiting, lb 3oz. Seven people fished. Seven people weighed in. Total aggregate weight: 16lbs 5ozs.
