Philippe Newton Young of St Mary’s Primary School and James Smith of The Regis School travelled to Cannock, Staffordshire, to compete against the very best trampolinists in Britain.

The Dragonflyers club pair were representing their schools and southern England after qualifying in Bristol in January.

Both marched on to the competition floor led by the Union flag and stood for the National Anthem before starting their warm-up.

Smith was the first of the Dragonflyers to compete and his focus and confidence showed in two sensational and precise ten-bounce routines gaining him high scores including 8.9s, earning an under-15 boys’ elite bronze.

That set a standard for Newton Young to follow and he was not going to be outclassed.

He excelled himself with two accurate, technical performances - also scoring high eights, resulting in a silver medal in the under-11 boys’ elite group.

Nine-year-old Newton Young has another year in this category and is hoping to be British champion next year.

Dragonflyers head coach Linda O’Leary said: “It was an amazing day. Dragonflyers trampolinists have finished fourth and fifth in previous years so it was fantastic to be among the medals this year, with not one but two performers.

“I’m very proud of the boys - their achievements will raise enthusiasm in the club. Their team-mates were very supportive and excited.”

The club thanked Mathew Reynolds of Reynolds furniture firm for sponsoring Newton Young and funding travel costs, while The Regis School continued their support of Smith and the club.

O’Leary said: “Without support, none of the achievements would be possible as Flyers are a non-profit-making community club whose funds go into improving the number and standard of children and coaches.”
